bikes for africa

Greetings visionaries,

After many years of preparations I'm about to leave for Africa to do bicycle work. A big important part of making this happen is the community thing I've been doing here in Moscow with bikes for more than four years, i.e. free bike repair at Farmers Markets, Ren Fair, and on Monday nites with the International Friendship Association's(IFA) bike loan program. In all of those activities I was learning about bike repair, public relations, and public needs. Some of you already know of the ulterior motives behind the free service.

So I think its cool how a community-based thing like free bikes, repairs and lessons could then grow into something to serve the bigger, global community. I would like to thank all of you who have helped make this happen over the years, by giving good vibes, warm fuzzies, some really nice bikes and parts, and money , like that anonymous $100 bill in an envelope.

And then I specially want to thank those who gave the space to do this work here; the Farmers Market, Rennassaince Fair and JoAnn Trail of IFA and David Mucci of the UI SUB, who has provided shop space. Earl and the folks at Paradise Creek Bicycles have been most helpful with advice, repairs and discounts.

If you'd like more information about my bike work in Africa, Bill London is handling my reports list. I'll be sending reports every three weeks or so. His email is bill_london@hotmail.com.

I still need to raise $1500 so if you'd like to donate money send a check to Village Bicycle Project, 325 Lewis, Moscow, 83843. its tax-deductible!

for more info about the Village Bicycle Project and partner bike projects in Africa, send me an email.

goodby home sweet home!
Dave Peckham
