re: independent films

Hi Scott --

I think I personally would have nothing to do with it because I'm not
in the market for a building right now. What I'm saying is
individuals can choose for themselves, as they did when the building
was a church and then when it became the Micro. When Kenton starts
talking about the city or a non-profit owning the place in reverent
(get it?) tones, I get nervous.

The Micro was a successful for-profit (right?) business for many
years. For some reason, people started choosing to spend their
entertainment dollars elsewhere. Maybe they all bought DVD players.
Maybe they drive to Spokane to shop Nordstroms for the day. I'm just
guessing, but I think the closing of the Micro has a lot to do with
the greater affluence of today's college student. Back when I was at
the UI (get out the rocker, Grandpa) $1.50 for a ticket was a good
entertainment value. It was a big deal to go rent a VCR and show a
movie on the hall's television, or in someone's room. I bet VCRs and
TVs are common in students' rooms nowadays.

Yes, an art movie house would be nice and would add to the quality of
life in Moscow. But I thoroughly reject the idea that I should
subsidize movies either directly or through some kind of tax break for
a non-profit, especially since I already do (movies at Borah theater.)

Yours, Briana

p.s. sorry if everyone's getting tired of seeing my name before the
subject line. But I'd give you a break if there weren't so much to
deal with! :~) B.
