Public Meetings on Exiting Standards
I just received this announcement from the Idaho Dept. of Education.
The Idaho Existing Standards Commission will hold eight meetings across the
state to receive community input on the first draft of the state's exiting
standards. The Open House in Lewiston will be held Thursday, July
30th--7-9:30 pm., at Lewiston High School, 1114 9th Ave.
At the meetings, members of the public can meet the state's Existing
Standards Coordinator Lydia Guerra, members of the Exiting Standards
Commission and Commission subcommittee members. Participants also can give
comments on the process and provide written comments on the first draft of
the standards. Copies of the draft standards also will be available at the
open
house.
In 1997, the State Board of Education created a citizen commission to write
exiting standards for students in grades 9 through 12 in five cores areas:
math, science, social studies, language arts and health. Once adopted, the
exiting standards will detail the skills and knowledge students graduating
from Idaho schools will be expected to master.
The first draft of the standards is complete. The commission plans to
incorportate input from the open houses into second and third draft of the
standards.
Dr. Tom Bitterwolf of Moscow is the local Commission member. Residents are
encouraged to contact thier regional representative on the commission. If
you have any questions call toll free 1-877-394-8464.
