re: Parking

A parking summit to bring together all the stakeholders is an exellent
suggestion.

Lori makes a good point: One need not give up the car altogether in order to
put a significant dent in parking demand. A commitment by everyone to use
alternative transportation just one day a week reduces demand by one-fifth.

Fort Collins has a successful program called "Smart Trips" aimed at reducing
single-occupant vehicle trips. One strategy is a variety of incentives for
using bus/bike/carpool/feet for commuting to work and school. A number of
merchants provide prizes or gift certificates to commuters who use alternative
transportation on a regular basis. How about gift certificates to Arby's for
the high school homeroom that reduces its single-occupant vehicle use the
most?

Visionaries,

I would like to add a small suggestion to the debate on parking problems
around MHS and the downtown area. How about a "Parking Summit", with heavy
involvement of students, people who work in the downtown area, and business
owners, etc. to look at the problems we face during the 9 months of the year
when school is is session.

As a result, I can imagine a commitment by those who live within a mile or
two of the High School and downtown to walk, bike, skate, ski, etc. to
school or work at least one day during the week. Call me a dreamer! Hey,
it would solve the parking problem and make us all so much more healthy.
