Legislation Concerning Prescription Drug Abuse

IThe three bills designed to reduce prescription drug abuse won't go
anyplace this year. These were proposals to keep addicts from picking
up the telephone to get fraudulent prescriptions for addictive drugs. Bill
553 was designed to tightenen loopholes that make it easy for
prescription drug addicts to get phone in prescriptions. HB 554 would
have made it a felony the second time someone tried to illegally obtain a
prescription by lying to a doctor, and HB 555 would have allowed the
state Board of Phamacy to suspend or revoke the controlled substance
licneses it issues to doctors, dentists, and other professionals to get
phone in prescriptions.

The bills have been pulled in return for an audit of existing laws and
procedures. The question is can current laws be more effectively
used, and can agencies do a better job of enforcing them. The state
Office of Performance audits each year and it is doubtful with their
work load that the information can be gathered before the next
legislative session. Legislators at this point should approve the
request for the audits.
