Swimming pool editorial

I must agree with the Daily news editorial about the pool. I cannot
support spending 4 million dollars on an outdoor facility that will be open
for limited hours during the day and for only a short period during the
summer. While I agree that a larger pool and the addition of the "toys"
will attract more swimmers, I feel it will attract only the 12 and under
crowd. Adults and teens will not use the pool. This will result in the
city having to spend more money on maintenance and on employees than was
spent on the old pool. As to the question raised on why we should build
another inside facility, again we don't have an inside facility in this
community. The UI pool belongs to the UI, not to the community. The UI
pool is for the use of students and faculty of the UI first. Open swim
times available to community users is very limited. Many community groups
use the UI pool, and pay fees for the privilege. That money could be
supporting the community pool instead of going into the UI coffers.
