Are there better funding alternatives to the prisons for which
the state of Idaho is spending millions of dollars to hold more and
more criminals?
This question will be debated at a community forum at 7:30 p.m.
Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, Second
and Van Buren. It is open to the public.
Speakers will be James R. (Doc) Lucas, former state legislator,
and Dr. Eric L. Jensen, University of Idaho sociologist. Bert Cross,
UI retiree, will serve as moderator.
The speakers, along with participation by the audience, will
explore such areas as what should constitute criminal activity and
what we want our prisons to do. Are they merely to punish people
or they also supposed to rehabilitate people?
And how is the funding for prisons affecting the funds available
for the public schools and other youth activities that might prevent crime?
Interested persons are invited to share their ideas and comments.
Hope to see some of you there.
