Here's the latest from Boise regarding the "takings" legislation that seems
to be officially dead for this year. Since we discussed this topic
repeatedly over the last few months, I thought this prognosis was worth
passing on....

>Here's an update on the two takings bills that we have been talking about
>the last couple weeks:
>
>Yesterday, the newly formed Property Rights Subcommittee of the House State
>Affairs Committee met for the first time. Due to their complexity and the
>concerns that have been raised regarding their implications, a vote on
>either HB 538 or 606 or bill is unlikely during this legislative session.
>
>The Property Rights subcommittee recommended the formation of an 'interim
>committee'. Assuming both the full House and Senate approve its formation,
>the interim committee will study the bills and the problem(s) they attempt
>to address throughout the summer. The committee will be assisted by
>landowners, local government representatives, and lawyers. The committee
>will likely sponsor public meetings around the state, perhaps beginning as
>early as June.
>
>The legislature could still act on one of the bills during this session if
>either the House or Senate fail to approve the formation of the interim
>committee.
>
>Thanks for your interest in HB's 538 and 606. Many people (especially
>members of the State Affairs Committee) have commented that they have been
>receiving large volumes of letters via fax and e-mail regarding these bills
>and that this correspondence has influenced their thinking on the matter.
> This is how democracy is supposed to work!

>THANKS AGAIN!
