I am somewhat perplexed by Robert Probasco's posting about
private school tax credit. I am a product of public schools (many
years ago) and my children are products of Moscow public
schools (also some year ago) and as I reach the upper years of my
eighth decade, I still feel good about paying taxes in support of public schools.
I have always believed that free public education was the very
foundation of a free and democratic society. I still do.
With such phrases as "bizarre philosophies that are counterproductive,"
"social promotion and CYA attitudes that preclude rational discipline (I
don't know what CYA means)," "appalling practices of the schools," or
"the idiocy we are witnessing," I'm a bit confused by what might be going on.
Could he supply an ill-informed old codger like me with some specific
examples of what he says the public schools are doing or not doing? These
are pretty inflammatory accusations without some supporting evidence.
I'm not about to give up on public education. It always needs improvement,
but you don't improve something by deserting it.
