1. $1,500 Tax Credit for Parents Who Send Children to Private
Schools--This
was introduced into committee by Reps. Barrett and Stubbs. The
committee
did not approve printing the bill. This particular bill is
dead for this
session. I understand that Rep. Stubbs is rewriting the bill
which will
ask for a $500 tax credit. This is basically the same bill that
did not make it
to the house floor during the last session.
2. PERSI Retirement Enhancement--Reps. Miller, Bieter, and I met with
a coalition representing firefighters, police, school teachers,
state employees,
and classified staff. We have agreed to sponsor legislation
which we
call the PERSI Retirement Equity or Enhancement Bill. If passed
indi viduals, for example, wishing to retire with 85 points could
do so with
a much reduced penalty. The bill will not cost a single tax
dollar from the
General Fund. It will be funded within the PERSI Fund by
increasing the
number of years of unfunded liability. Current PERSI retirement
benefits
are guaranteed by the fund. Individuals under the PERSI plan
should
write their local legislators for their support.
Rep. Tom Trail/District 5
