If the rumor is true, this will not be the first time that Hagadone
has tried to buy the Moscow paper. It was his offer to buy the
Idahonian in 1967 that finally brought about the paper's ownership by
the Lewiston Morning Tribune. Hagadone then headed what was known as
the Scripps League and he controlled a fairly large number of
newspapers at that time. He had bought the Pullman Herald and
decided he also wanted the Idahonian. Boas wanted to sell and so did
the Robinsons. However, to Bill Marineau is was ABD (Anybody But
Duane). It's my understanding that he talked Bud Alford (Butch's
Dad) into putting up the money for a 40 percent interest and the
Short family (Short's Funeral Home) put up the other 40 percent. The
Marineaus had the other 20 percent.
Bud kept his hands off the Idahonian and the Tribune continued to cover
Moscow and in often did a better job than the Idahonian. Russ
Short worked at the Idahonian for several years (I don't remember
exactly what he did) but eventually the LMT bought out the Shorts and
gained 80 percent. Bud Alford was the kind of a publisher who was
never ruled by the bottom line. He was a dedicated newspaperman
whose main purpose was to put out the best damned newspaper possible.
They don't grow them like that anymore.
If Hagadone buys this one, he'll own every newspaper in North Idaho
north of Lewiston except the St. Maries Gazette-Record. God forbid!
