The demand for the U of I swimming pool exceeds its availability to the
community because university programs have priority during the school
day--approximately 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. That means all the swim lessons,
swim team practices, master's classes, etc. are fit in between 4 p.m. and
the start of "open swim" at 7 p.m. Better than nothing, but from my
recollection, 5 p.m. isn't a great time to do ANYTHING with a young child.
While there is a noon lap swim, and lap swim early in the morning and late
at night, most community pools offer all-day lap swim. UI cannot do this.

Furthermore, while we may have "paid" for this facility, the UI charges
people who are not UI faculty, staff, or students. The mission of the UI is
not to serve the community, even when it comes to recreation, and the cost
and availability of the recreational facilities reflect this.
