Teh Lewiston Tribune ran a two-part series on growth in Asotin County
(CLarkston) WA, on Sunday Nov. 2 and Monday Nov. 3. Elaine Williams did a
good job.
Asotin County was the fastest growing county in this region over
the last few years. From 1990 to 96, Asotin Co's population increased by
18%. During the same period, Latah Co. population grew by 8%, and
Whitman County by 2%.
Some of the reasons for growth there: mellow climate, easier
access to state welfare and other social services, homesites available
without zoning restrictions.
The result has been--infrastructure at max, today's property owner
pays for future growth (and is not happy about that), the county
commissioners are considering zoning for teh first time.
This series documents a good example of the dilemma local
government's can fall into.....
