In this quarter's issue of Northern Lights, local author Stephen Lyons has
an excellent essay about his changing relationship with his 17-yr old
daughter. It is set in Moscow and Pulllman -- towns that are evolving
along with the relationship. "I find comfort with the same surroundings
and disruption with too many changes," he says. "Lately, as I look around
my home territory, it's disruption that has the upper hand." He goes on to
chronicle development that has transformed Moscow and Pullman from the
places that now exist only in the minds of some of us diehard dreamers.
I identified with Stephen as he recognized his insufferable tendency to
lecture our kids about wanton use of resources and development. They don't
give a hoot! ("Could you give me a ride to the mall . . . ")
You can probably pick up a copy of Northern Lights at Bookpeople, or at
least order one from Bob.

By the way, on a similar vein, how do you like that new Staples sign?
