For anyone interested in community festivals--get-togethers that build
community--the Santa Barter Fair is a great destination.
The site is funky. A forested meadow down a dirt road in rural
Benewah County, about 60 miles north of Moscow. No water, no electricity,
none of the normal amenities.
But this event has been the annual autumnal get-together for the
forest-dwellers and back-to-the-landers from this region since 1980.
The large open meadow site is ringed with busses, trucks, RV's and
cars and piles of stuff (crafts, homegrown vegetables, tools, garage sale
stuff, etc). The stuff is there for sale or trade.
The real fun is Saturday night when everyone joins in the big
potluck dinner and after-dinner music jam.
Kids run around and have a great time.
This year the fair is September 6 and 7. For more info (or
directions) call Leah at 208-245-4381.
