Tames Alan presents her living history lecture From the Streets=20
of Shakespeare to the Court of Elizabeth: Clothing and Lifestyles=20
of the Elizabethan Era, on Wednesday, March 26, at 5:00 p.m. at the=20
University of Idaho Brink Faculty Lounge, in the last of the Women's
History Month programs sponsored by the Women's Center.
Tames Alan is an actress, historian, and fashion history teacher who has=20
combined her skills to create an educational lecture for people of all ages=
=2E=20
In this lecture she first appears in an authentic lower-middle-class=20
Elizabethan costume and talks about the life, times, fabrics, and=20
dyes of the period. Later, she changes into an authentic 62-piece Elizabeth=
an=20
court costume with full makeup. As she dresses, she describes each piece=20
of clothing and its significance. Once fully dressed in court costume,=20
Tames describes the life and times in Elizabeth=92s court and answers quest=
ions=20
from the audience.
This cultural event will be of special interest to lovers of history and=20
clothing, in addition to students of art, history, women=92s studies,=20
Shakespearean theater, costume and design.
Tames studied theater and history at Willamette University in Oregon,=20
and theater at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and=20
Dell Arte School in California. Throughout her theatrical career, she=20
maintained her interest in history and costuming. She worked for many=20
years with the California Renaissance Faire as an instructor in Elizabethan=
=20
dialect and culture. Tames has taught fashion history at the Art Institute=
=20
of Seattle, offering a class that combined fashion history, social history,=
=20
and women=92s studies. More recently, she has been a speaker for the=20
Washington State Commission for the Humanities in their Inquiring=20
Minds series.
