ISDN: Integrated Services Digital Network...actually there are several
protocols included in "ISDN", but the one that is available in Portland and
Seattle for residential customers for $35-60 used the existing copper
telephone wires to your home, provides you with 2 voice/data lines at 64
kbps, and one packet switching connection (also used for telephone
switching data)...using existing copper cables (oh, I already said that).
It is necessary for the end-user to buy digital telephones and a different
digital data interface unit. According to an article in The Economist last
July, and really an opinion that is not so far out there, the local
telephone companies have really booted their opportunities to avoid traffic
problems, and tie in their data customers, by not pricing ISDN closer to
cost instead of at the rate equivalent to two regular voice lines.
