One result of our latest 2020 steering committee meeting was this list of
projects proposed and/or planned for this year. All of the proposals
could use further assistance by 2020 volunteers. IF anything strikes
your fancy, please contact the person involved or one of the steering
committee members (the steering committee is Mark Becker, Priscilla
Salant and Bill London).
1. Contact Priscilla Salant--Portrait of the Palouse. The goal
is to create a comprehensive report (a portrait of the Palouse) with
up-to-date economic and demographic information about Latah and Whitman
Counties that can be used by public officials, businesses and private
citizens. The cost is approximately $8,360, which will be raised
(hopefully) from a variety of public and private sources.
2. Contact Bill London--traffic calming. The goal is to begin a
city-wide program to retrofit residential neighborhood streets with
traffic calming devices (structures that are designed to slow traffic and
make safer neighborhoods). Traffic calming is now specifically listed in
the Moscow transportation plan as a strategy. A demonstration or pilot
project is now possible on the block of Polk Street between Third and
Sixth. 2020 may co-sponsor public forums on traffic calming and help
spread the word.
3. Contact Susan Palmer--library reading. The goal is to sponsor
a series of readings on community-building themes at the Moscow library
by a wide range of local people.
4. Contact Lois Melina--Moscow's visionaries. The goal is to
sponsor a contest or other public involvement program to remember and
honor the visionaries who have shaped Moscow.
5. Contact Bill London--Community-based law enforcement.
Moscow's police have successfully incorporated community-based law
enforcement into their department (resulting in pro-active
get-to-know-the -people activities, not just tough enforcement). A group
of local people involved in local law enforcement issues are considering
forming an organization to publicize Moscow's program and to motivate the
Latah County sheriff's department into a similar philosophy. 2020 has
been contacted as a potential co-sponsor of various public forums.
