For the past year I have been serving on the Home and Community Based
Care Council serving five counties in Northern Idaho and our report was
just made public last month (and to my knowledge no newspapers have used
it) and one of its main recomendations was TO STRENGTHEN AND IMPROVE
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. It noted that public transportation is not
adequate in the outer-lying areas. Our main concern was with the
elderly, but it is important to everyone. We cited six specific reasons
why more and affordable public tansportation is needed. I'll get a
letter off to the House Committee on Public Transportation right away and
go into a bit more detail than I have here. A bill to require all
seniors 75 or over to take a driver's test never made it through
committee, but there is some concern to limit driving by the elderly and
not without some reason. But there needs to be more and better public
transportation. This is something we all can benefit from (and not just
those of us who are elderly impaired). I hope others will join in
support of this bill. Bert Cross
