Opportunity to hear other points of view

Last week's public meeting on rural residential zoning in Latah County was a
real eye opener for me. One man said he thought we needed more low-tech and
commericial growth in the undeveloped parts of the county. Two different
couples described how frustrated they were because they couldn't split off
pieces of their land for their grown kids to live in trailers or small
houses. Someone else said that everyone should have the right to live on
5-acre lots if that would accomodate the demand for affordable rural living.
Another suggested that getting rid of all zoning would work a lot better
than the current system. Not exactly the stuff of discussion on the Vision
2020 list serve, where we tend to argue the finer points of the porch-no
porch debate, and various environmental issues.

If you ever feel, as I do, that you live in a somewhat insular world, I
strongly encourage you to attend -- and listen carefully -- at the upcoming
planning meetings around the county. These gatherings offer an excellent
opportunity to learn how people outside Moscow feel about planning issues.

Priscilla's examples of diverse but not probably very representative
opinion are exactly why Greg Brown's point is so important -- survey
research like the county-growth opinion survey is critically
important because it promotes democratic (i.e., equitable)
representation, not just that of certain squeaky wheels...
