PALOUSE LAND TRUST NEWSLETTER WINTER 1996
Helping the Private Landowner Protect Community Open Space
5 Kenworthy Plaza, Moscow, Idaho 83843 208-882-5248

TAX EXEMPT STATUS OK'D
The IRS granted full charitable status to the Land Trust in late November.
All donations to the Land Trust, whenever made, are now tax deductible
charitable donations.
This is a major step for the land trust as it allows donors of land,
conservation easements, and cash or other gifts to deduct the gifts on their
personal tax returns. In addition, the Land Trust gains access to reduced
mailing rates and can seek grants from foundations.

THE LAND TRUST SPONSORS "SPECIAL AREAS" SURVEY FOR LATAH COUNTY PLANNING
COMMISSION.
The Land Trust and University of Idaho professor Craig Miller's class will
survey longtime Latah County residents, both through a random survey and
through contacts with selected land owners, to help the Commission identify
the County's "special places". The Latah County Comprehensive plan calls for
the preservation of agricultural and forest land, and preservation of the
cultural, scenic and natural amenities of the County. Both of these goals
are consistent with the goals of the Land Trust. The survey seeks to
identify those areas which the residents feel are special and worthy of
special designation in any new ordinances.

SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC MEETINGS ON TAB
The Latah County Planning Commission will conduct a Town Meeting
facilitated by Tom Hudson on the 31st of January beginning at 7:00pm in the
City Council Chambers. This meeting will be Moscow's opportunity to supply
input to the Commission in drafting new ordinances. Landowners, particularly
within the area of City impact are encouraged to attend.
The City of Moscow will host renown conservation planner Randall Arndt.
(author of "Rural by Design" and conservation planner with the Natural Lands
Trust in Media PN.) He will conduct all day workshops on March 1 and 2 in
the Community Center of Moscow. He will present alternative development
ideas that are being used in other areas to encourage open space and
farmland protection.
