Sounds good Anne. But I can't say I actually beleive it. Respect....I
have a hard time respecting the species Homo sapiens in light of the
immense disruption it has caused on a global scale. Not to mention this
species kills more of its own (with understood consequences) than any
other organism I know of. This doesn't mean I don't respect individual
humans, just the species as a whole.
So, I have not developed this respect of "ourselves" that you claim
is necessary to care about wild places. In fact it is the disrespect of
ourselves that has instilled my concerns for wilderness. I realize this
view doesn't apply to everyone, nor should it. But misanthropy is an
unavoidable consequence to those of us who have a hard time being proud
about our taxon.
