Greg, I must wholeheartedly agree with your comments on the crime against
nature that is occurring on the south side of Idaho. I would like to
mention that we also have a crime of similar nature ongoing on the north
side of Moscow as well. Anyone who travels highway 95 can see the bare
soil in the ditch and the bare ground that is eroding eventually to
Paradise Creek. I watched a ditch develop after the first rain storm
that was at least a foot deep. It would not be too much to ask the
contractors to at least spread some straw and other mulch on these sorts
of activities when they are done, even if the "bottom line" is affected.
Also, in all of this debate that I hear and read, I do not see much
mention of the water shortage and the damage to wildlife habitat that is
going to happen as we continue to develop. It would certainly seem that
rational planners would first look at the fundamental resources, such as
water, before they consider zoning changes. There are plots of
ground in this county now that change ownerships after dry wells are
drilled and the next owner is not made aware. Just as
will ultimately be the case with Las Vegas, Moscow, and Latah County, Idaho,
will one day have to reckon with the limits to growth imposed by resource
capabilities.
