One of the highly desired ameinities in a house is a "view". If you
build on a hilltop, you know no one is going to put up another
"trophy house" which blocks your view. I know of someone in the
Pioneer addition who paid extra for a "view lot" The Pioneer 2
addition then sold more extra cost view lots which blocked his view!

In Seattle, "view wars" saw one resident take a chain saw to a row of
public trees which flanked his lot. After paying the fine, he
figured he was still ahead because the new view increased the value
of his house more than he had paid in fines.

On the other hand, maybe people who build huge houses on hilltops
just feel a need to show off. :-)
