The Shared FAcilities Task Force will hold a public meeting Tuesday, oct. 10,
at 7 p.m., in room 2-B of the courthouse. This meeting will include a
presentation and discussion of the latest options for shifting government
agencies and consolidating some offices.

According to the Daily News, a key element of this proposal is building a
new high school on a multi-acre site on the edge of town and converting
the existing high school to cojunty administrative offices, with possibly
some state offices as well.

I have several reservations about this proposal including:
1. The latest remodeling and additions to the current high school won't
be paid off until 2009.
2. High school enrollment has been flat the last few years, which makes it
hard to justify a new, larger building.
3. With the current location, it is at least theoretically possible for
some students to walk to school. If the high school is on the edge of
town, everyone drives. (Look what has happened in Pullman, where the new
high school (1973) was built on the north end of town.)
4. A central high school supports downtown businesses.

If you have opinions on this proposal, I encourage you to attend Tuesday's
meeting. More information is available from the County Commissioners'
office at 882-8580.
